Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
All forms of craniosacral therapy were developed to work with the subtle and gentle expansion and contraction of the rhythmic system at the core of our physiology – the pulse of fluid energy that flows between our head and pelvic area referred to as the polyrhythmic cycle. This is as essential, measurable, and tangible as our breath and heart beat. In full expression we have health, if obscured we have problems.
The Biodynamic approach creates a supportive environment for the client’s nervous system to settle and generate a therapeutic change from within. A skilled therapist listens to the subtle pulsations of the system as the body tells its story through its rhythms, micro-movements and how it has managed its experiences in patterns of physical shaping. With deep listening the therapist encourages revitalization of the inherent healing potential of the system, and facilitates the release of patterns of resistance. This approach focuses on listening to the health of the system and encouraging its expression and supporting and nurturing its natural expression. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle hands-on work that honors the client’s own self-healing process.
How Does Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Work
The therapist works with the bones of the skull and the pelvis that affects the deeper layers of membranes and cerebrospinal fluids in the spinal canal, the brain, and the spinal cord itself. Why is this important? A pulse through the fluids proceeds through the entire craniosacral system, like an ocean wave. From sutures in the skull to the spinal cord, it cycles about six to ten times a minute causing tiny movements. Dr. Upledger, D.O. calls it a hydraulic system with all the components working together to regulate the pressure of fluids on the brain and the need for optimal circulation that depends on constant mobility. When the membranes and lubricating liquids lose their freedom to glide freely, we hurt and symptoms start. Craniosacral therapy helps the body to re-establish an unobstructed wave, which is how symptoms disappear.
What to expect during a session
In a session, you lay fully clothed on a therapy table while I use gentle to firm hands-on techniques to support your body's ability to find stillness, helping your nervous system reach a state of balance and calm. At this stage, the forces of past or recent impact, stress and trauma meet with the abiding health within you where healing responses can begin. I continue to listen and follow your body’s lead that knows how to reorganize an issue. You are likely to feel a sense of calm and deep relaxation at the completion of a session.
Who can benefit from Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Everyone, from pre-born babies and their mothers to the elderly; all ages benefit. People of any age and in any stage of health, illness or recovery will find benefit as it works to bring the inherent health, (original blueprint or abiding health), of the clients system forward in a gentle yet profound way that is holistic, safe, and honoring of the client. It’s about melting stress and strained patterns the body has been holding, allowing movement, ease and a calm centered experience.

More About Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Health abides within you. The natural forces that caused you to grow within your mother's womb and into an adult, remain with you during your entire life. These natural forces are what maintain, repair and restore you to your original state of health or blueprint.
When your body is injured, stressed or traumatized, or when you are under emotional or mental stress your system learns to compensate, hold patterns and adapt using whatever resources are available. Your body's health has not been removed; it is still there holding the compromised areas so your body can function. As you age, your body’s ability to hold these compromised areas can seem lost or unavailable and problems seem to suddenly appear. When your nervous system reaches a state of stillness and calm through applying Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, your natural forces become stronger and more present and are able to work on deeper levels in your body, reorganizing issues created by your diverse life experiences. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can help restore your body’s vitality and ability to find resources to support the healing of any state of imbalance you may find yourself in. Stress affects every part of your physiology, including emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of who you are. Calming your nervous system can help restore or help maintain balance to the many layers of who you are.
A Brief History of Craniosacral Therapy
In the early 1900’s, William Sutherland, DO (1873-1954) discovered a subtle, tide like movement in the body that welled up and receded with various timings embedded in one another. This movement exists in all layers of the system, the bones, soft tissue and fluids. Along with his colleagues, Sutherland experimented with and interacted with this movement finding remarkable benefits for patients. Rollin Becker, DO (1918-1994) and other osteopaths expanded the applications. In the early 1970’s, John Upledger, DO introduced the concepts outside of osteopathy. Today craniosacral therapy is considered the fastest-growing touch therapy (Massage Magazine). Click here for more information
